The Lawmakers Assembly Coordinator is responsible for managing and convening the Sagkeeng Lawmakers Assembly. The Coordinator leads the development of new laws and changing existing laws. The Coordinator will engage Sagkeeng Community members on the new laws and changes in existing laws and educate Sagkeeng members about Sagkeeng’s legal system. The Coordinator is the liaison between the Band Council and the Lawmakers Assembly.

DUTIES:

  • Facilitating the selection of the delegates by convening the four councils (men, women, youth and elders). The delegate leads the Lawmakers Assembly and has specific responsibilities under the Sagkeeng Onakonigawin
  • Creating and maintaining the terms or reference and selection criteria for the roles and responsibilities of the Four Councils and the Delegates Council
  • Meet regularly with the community to listen to issues and educate the community on new laws and regulations
  • Design community events to attract support for upcoming meetings, readings, elections etc.
  • Facilitate the legislative process by taking the necessary steps to enact, amend or repeal laws and regulations
  • Organize, convene and chair Lawmakers Assembly meetings open to all Sagkeeng members
  • Supervising short-term staff (eg: ratification votes)
  • Participate in developing or amending government policies, programs or procedures
  • Represent their government at local, national and international meetings and conferences
  • Respond to matters of concern to constituents or the general public

SKILLS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Law, Public Policy, Social Science or related filed or equivalent work experience in Public Policy Development or related field
  • Strong analytical skills with a strong interest in developing policy recommendations from research
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Very strong organizational skills with attention to detail
  • Experience dealing with high conflict environments and with conflict resolution an asset
  • Experience organizing community meetings and other mass participation events an asset
  • Knowledge of the Anishinaabemowin an asset
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment
  • Ability to be open to criticism
  • Strong background in Sagkeeng culture, history and way of life
