SAGKEENG HYDRO LIAISON
1 term year, with possible extension

Reporting to the Director of Operations on behalf of Sagkeeng Leadership (Chief and Council), the Sagkeeng Hydro Liaison will be responsible for serving as a bridge between Manitoba Hydro and Sagkeeng generally, and in relation to the negotiation of a new Hydro Accord.  The Liaison will work closely with Sagkeeng membership, Executive Management and Leadership to ensure that the input and interests of members are heard and become part of the Hydro Accord negotiations. Sagkeeng Hydro Liaison will also serve as a front-line problem solver for Sagkeeng members experiencing challenges in their individual relationships with Manitoba Hydro. Salary for this role will be $50.00 per hour-40 hours per week.

Role and Responsibilities of the First Nation Liaison:

  • Communicate with First Nation members about the Hydro Accord negotiations, coordinate surveys, focus groups, information sessions, and other opportunities to both share and receive information in support of community ratification process;
  • Chairing and facilitating discussions between community and Manitoba Hydro;
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships between First Nation’s leadership, community members and Manitoba Hydro to improve processes and outcomes in the relationship between Manitoba Hydro and Sagkeeng;
  • Carry out such tasks as may be assigned by Chief and Council, or jointly assigned by Manitoba Hydro and Chief and Council.
  • Facilitate the performance of such tasks assigned to the First Nation or reasonably required to be performed by the First Nation in support of their relationship with Manitoba Hydro.
  • Participate in and help coordinate any studies, research or assessments, in relation to Manitoba Hydro, undertaken for the First Nation and its members.
  • Be the first point of contact for Sagkeeng members experiencing challenges in their relationships with Manitoba Hydro and its services, including but not limited to:
    • Billing and payment issues.
    • Connections and disconnections.
    • Energy efficiency.
  • Briefing senior and executive management on the progress of related files;
  • Writing various documents including workplans, letters, reports, briefing notes, advisory notes, budgets, work plans, agendas, and minutes
  • Other responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time by Director of Operations, Chief and Council or jointly with Manitoba Hydro

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Highly developed interpersonal skills including proficiency in community engagement, and the ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with a variety of people
  • In-depth knowledge of Sagkeeng and its community dynamics.
  • Experience managing politically sensitive situations through the use of diplomacy and tact
  • Effective communicator both written and verbal.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
  • Good understanding of Anishinaabe culture and identity.
  • Experience building consensus towards common goals involving multiple stakeholders with competing interests
  • Individuals with the ability to speak Anishinaabemowin are strongly preferred.
  • Valid Class 5 MB driver’s license
  • Access to a reliable registered vehicle is required
