Community Support Worker

The role of the Community Support Worker is to develop and implement group activities aimed at reducing the prevalence of substance misuses and behavioral addictions in the community. The Counsellor will also provide counselling, crisis intervention, harm reduction, programming and community workshops and aftercare. Ensure all areas of prevention, intervention, harm reduction and aftercare are provided.
DUTIES:
- Develop and implement services and group activities aimed at reducing the prevalence of drug and alcohol in the community,
- Conduct individual assessments and screening to determine client needs,
- Provide one-on-one, family and group counselling to individuals and families struggling with addiction
- Facilitate referrals to available treatment centers
- Facilitate regular group sessions and workshops
- Participate in case management meetings with both internal and external partners to determine client care plan
- Network and liaise with external partners to collaborate and enhance addiction services jointly offered to community
- Advocate on behalf of client to improve social determinants of health (ie, housing, healthy social inclusion, etc) and to remove or reduce barriers to recovery
- Assist in developing annual work plans and reports
- Regularly document client encounters in accordance with SHC privacy policies and PHIA
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Degree/diploma in Health/Social Services or Mental Health/Addictions or related discipline
- Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle
- Two (2) years experience working in the field of mental health and/or social services is preferred
- Understanding of various factors that may lead to addiction
- Extensive knowledge and experience in addictions, treatment and/or harm reduction is a major asset however training will be provided
- Knowledge of available addictions resources and programs available to community members
- Ability to speak in public and facilitate various groups
- Ability to write detailed reports
- Knowledge of First Nation Community, social and health services, challenges and opportunities unique to First Nation Communities
