Reporting to the Resource Coordinator, the Resource Teacher is to support students with exceptionalities by adapting the general education curriculum for them. They accomplish this by assessing students and helping the design of appropriate educational programming based on these assessments. They also help general education teachers implement these plans. They also act as a liaison between the family, the student and other educational professionals at school.
DUTIES:
- Evaluate and determine student’s learning capacity and adapt lesson plans according to them.
- Develop Individualized Education Plan (IEP), Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP), Individual Transition Plan (ITP), Targeted Intervention Plan (TIP), and daily plans for students.
- Oversee teacher assistants who work with these students.
- Help general education teachers in inclusive classrooms to formulate lessons so children with special needs can comprehend them.
- Develop appropriate evaluation methods.
- Work with students as required either in a one-on-one, small group or whole group setting and shall provide tutoring assistance and support to assist the student’s academic success.
- Evaluate the progress of students and discuss student’s progress with parents, counsellors/mental health workers, administration and school officials as required.
- Participate in staff meetings, educational conferences, teacher training workshops, and other activities as required and/or assigned.
- May require working extracurricular hours.
- Other duties within scope of the position as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor of Education degree and preferably a Master’s Degree in Education or related field.
- Valid Manitoba Teaching Certificate.
- Manitoba Special Education certificate or certification in progress.
- Previous experience as a Resource Teacher.
- Knowledge of Indigenous Ways of Life.
- Excellent understanding of current Manitoba curricula and differentiated instruction.
- Knowledge and training in formal and informal assessment.
- Familiar with appropriate educational programming.
- Ability to complete provincial documentation requirements for appropriate educational programming.
- Ability to interpret educational and cognitive assessments.
- Willingness to be trained in intervention programs presently in place.
- A commitment to continue to support on-going programs in the school.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Posses good working ethics and habits (punctuality and attendance).
- Ability to maintain confidentiality with respect to all matters pertaining to students, staff and families in all verbal and written communications.
- Experience in conflict resolution is an asset.
- Clear criminal record and abuse registry checks.
- Valid driver’s licence and a reliable automobile.
