Youth Intern – High School Greenhouse

The primary purpose of this internship is to facilitate green house and to learn how to work within the greenhouse. The intern will be tasked with the maintenance of the existing greenhouse. the growing and harvesting of current crops as well as future crops. He/she will also be tasked with learning the proper husbandry processes and procedures of crops as well as of plants. SEA anticipates there will be more than one mentor who can or will oversee and supervise the intern(s). That is to say, there are aspects of the role that require different sets of expertise to instill in the incumbent. In addition, SEA anticipates and hopes to have a teacher guide various learning aspects of husbandry and greenhouse maintenance. Further, that a greenhouse technician will oversee the maintenance and ‘hands on’ of husbandry as well as a youth skills link to assist with career and developmental planning for the incumbent beyond the scope of the project. The focus and degree of involvement with the listed activities will change and depend on the needs of the individuals engaged as intern(s). Activities are as follows:

  1. Provide training to students, education and community members
    • Offer ‘on the spot’ training or one on one training to intern(s), educators and community members.
    • Plan and use training sessions for specific target audiences on a regular basis, student session (ie. Educator’s sessions, student sessions, and community at large sessions).
    • Survey students, educators and community members at large.
  2. Promote and create awareness of the benefits of greenhouse practices, cultural relevant plant gathering and harvesting practices as well as plant/crop management.
    • Create posters and pamphlets
    • Organize presentations for specific target groups (ie. Students, educators, community members, chief and council etc..) to generate awareness and interest in greenhouses, medicine or food gathering practices and food security. Its potential impact on cultural practices and harvesting techniques.
    • Invite community members to learn about traditional harvesting techniques and practices.
    • write a feature story about the greenhouse, or community history around wild rice harvesting and gathering practices.
  3. Offer and invite information sharing experiences with members at large, elders and educators
    • General maintenance of the greenhouse
    • Installation of seeds, plants and sod
    • Trouble shooting greenhouse and plant problems
  4. Greenhouse support
    • Create greenhouse space
    • Assist in maintaining greenhouse and keep informed of plant management practices
  5. Administrative services
    • Report status of greenhouse, plant and crops
    • Inform community of open greenhouse visits
    • Support activities of traditional practitioners of plant harvesting
  6. Required activities for Agriculture Canada
    • Participate in orientation and skills development sessions
    • Complete activity reports as necessary
    • Participation in Skills development Assessment.
    • Celebrate success – write a short story explaining how the opportunity of the Youth Internship has influenced your experience or how you feel you have benefitted from the experience.
  7. Participate in Host Organization
    • Work within the host organization
    • Involvement in special events

Wages:

  • Youth intern(s) position has a wage of $17.30. All youth will receive 4% vacation pay (on gross amount) with very pay cheque
  • Interns are nor eligible sick time nor other leave
  • Under no circumstances will over time be expected or paid.
  • Sagkeeng Education Authority will forward payroll related information to interns. (paystubs, ROEs, and T4s) through mail services
  • Pay will be direct deposit on a bi-weekly basis
