Addictions Counselor (NNADAP Worker)
Sagkeeng Health Centre

The Sagkeeng Health Centre is looking for someone who is passionate about helping to alleviate the drug crisis in our community to work as an Addictions Counselor in our NNADAP program. The successful candidate is compassionate, adopts a harm reduction approach towards those struggling with addiction, and is unwavering in their personal and professional mission to assisting these individuals.

DUTIES:

  • Develop and implement services and group activities aimed at reducing the prevalence of drug and alcohol addiction in the community,
  • Conduct individual assessments and screenings to determine client needs,
  • Provide one-on-one, family and group counselling to individuals and families struggling with addiction,
  • Facilitate referrals to available treatment centres in Manitoba and Ontario,
  • Facilitate regular group sessions and workshops,
  • Participate in case management meetings with both internal and external partners to determine client care plans,
  • Network and liaise with external partners to collaborate and enhance addictions services jointly offered to community
  • Advocate on behalf of client to improve social determinants of health (i.e. housing, healthy social inclusion, etc.) and to remove or reduce barriers to recovery,
  • Assist in developing annual work plans and reports,
  • Regularly document client encounters in accordance with SHC privacy policies and PHIA.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Post-secondary diploma or degree in social work, social science, human ecology, mental health/addictions, or related discipline,
  • Previous experience working as a counsellor in the addictions or mental health fields is an asset,
  • Understanding of various factors that may lead to addiction,
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in addictions, treatment, and/or harm reduction is a major asset however training will be provided,
  • Knowledge of available addictions resources and programs available to community members,
  • Ability to speak in public and facilitate various groups,
  • Valid Manitoba driver’s license and reliable access to a vehicle are required,
  • Ability to write detailed reports,
  • Knowledge of traditional customs, therapies, and practices is an asset
  • Knowledge of First Nations communities, social and health services, challenges and opportunities unique to First Nation communities and programs,

Preference will be given to persons of aboriginal ancestry with priority given to Sagkeeng Band Members.
