Spring is here, the snow is melting and the grass is starting to appear. During this time, we would like to remind all community members about the risks and dangers of grass and wildfires.
We are asking community members to please refrain from starting fires in the community. Do not start fires along the roads, in the fields and ditches or in yards. Small fires can get out of control in seconds and may threaten other properties and could result in the loss of structures and/or homes.
The Sagkeeng Fire Department responded to 88 Grass/Wildfires last year, with 75% (69 fires) during the months of April & May alone. There were several occasions when the fire department responded to multiple fires at the same time and their resources were stretched to their limits and there were times when the fire department required assistance from Manitoba Conservation and the Powerview/Pine Falls Fire Department or significant losses may have occurred.
The Sagkeeng Fire Department will be conducting controlled burns in high-risk areas in the community, but they will not be conducting controlled burns on request from community members.
What can you do to help prevent fire and protect your property?
- Do not start fires;
- Cut grass and weeds around your home and any structures in your yard;
- Clear away any dead vegetation and trees;
- Prune and remove tree branches within 6 feet (2 meters) of the ground;
- Share this information with other family and community members; and
